AT Seika High School, which was once an all-boy school, the girls (who only make up 20% of the enrolment) live in fear of the boys’ wild and insensitive ways.

Enter Misaki Ayuzawa, who takes on the role of being the girls’ protector. As the first female student council president, Misaki ensures that the boys behave and strives hard to reform the school to make it a girl-friendly environment. It’s little wonder then that Misaki has earned a reputation as a tough-as-nails, no-nonsense girl, which complements her excellence in studies and sports.

One day, popular boy Takumi Usui stumbles on Misaki’s hard-kept secret: she actually works part-time as an eager-to-please “maid” at Maid Latte.

A mortified Misaki is sure that her hard-earned reputation will crumble to dust the next day. To her total surprise, Takumi keeps mum about her work at the maid cafe. However, as she realises later, there’s a price for his silence: Takumi, who has taken an interest in her, has started to tease her and order her around mercilessly. There’s nothing she can do about it but to oblige lest he leak out her secret!

The characters of Maid Sama! may seem stereotypical initially but this will change as the story progresses. Misaki, for one, has a good reason not to think highly of men: her father had deserted her family, leaving her with no choice but to work part-time to supplement the household income.

Takumi, who may seem like a spoiled, rich kid at first, has a complicated family history that would turn anyone into a sourpuss. Somehow, he manages to live life according to his own terms instead of those set by his less-than-ideal family.

Maid Sama! is being produced by J.C. Staff, the anime studio responsible for hit series Nodame Cantabile and Shakugan no Shana.

Originally an award-winning manga by Hiro Fujiwara (in 2006, it won the “Outstanding Debut” award at Japan’s 31st Hakusensha Athena Newcomers’ Awards), Maid Sama! has been adapted into an anime which premieres on Animax (Astro Channel 715) today.

Malaysians will be able to watch Maid Sama! just three days after the series’ debut in Japan. Maid Sama! is Animax’s fourth simulcast series, following last year’s Tears to Tiara in April, which was the world’s first anime series simulcast at the same time as Japan; Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (April) and Inuyasha: The Final Act (October), which were aired in the same week as in Japan.

“By far, viewers have reacted very well to simulcast shows which continue to be special broadcast arrangements that demand significant resources and efforts to realise. We are confident the channel is on the right track and will work towards bringing even more anime simulcasts to Animax,” said Animax Asia vice-president and general manager Gregory Ho.
